62- The Beauty Standard Treadmill: Running with Trends and Getting Nowhere

Hello My Loves,

I hope you’ve had a lovely week, I am so happy it’s Monday!

I am at the start of my summer shred and all good things start on a Monday. I went to Rome last week so, I took a week off but,  I am officially back in the gym today! I just want to feel better than I do right now and re-focus. It’s necessary to reshuffle every once in a while, moving swiftly on to beauty standards…

Now, let’s be real: Keeping up with beauty trends is like running on a treadmill in six-inch stilettos, you’re moving (painfully) but not actually getting anywhere because you are never satisfied. One minute, every one has Brazilian blowouts, the next we’re all doing “blunt cut bobs”. Thin brows were so 2000s, but wait—now they're back! And don't even get me started on body trends-because last I checked, our bodies are not fast fashion.

But here we are, scrolling through Instagram, dodging "soft girl" one day and "mob wife aesthetic" the next, wondering, What am I supposed to look like this season, AM I REALLY WAITING FOR MY PHONE TO TELL ME?

Chasing Trends = Loosing Your Sanity

The constant evolution of beauty standards isn't just exhausting; it’s psychological warfare.

There's research showing that unrealistic beauty ideals can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and the absolute worst crime of all: spending way too much money on things you don't actually like.

Think about it. How many times have you bought a trendy makeup product or a must-have hairstyle only to look back six months later and cringe?

We're unconsciously trained to believe that if we just tweak one more thing; our hair, our lips, our entire bone structure then we'll finally be beautiful, accepted, and thriving. But here's the catch: beauty standards don't settle. The second you think you've "arrived," the finish line moves. It's the ultimate toxic situationship.

The Trend Detox: How to Escape the Madness

So, what's a trend-fatigued human to do? The answer isn't to boycott trends entirely (I mean, I will be buying that new lip oil, let's be honest). Instead, it's about learning to filter them.

Here's how:

1. Ask yourself: Do I actually like this?

Not do influencers like this? Not is TikTok screaming about it? But do you like it? If the answer is "I don't know," step away from the Sephora cart and reconsider.

2. Trends are a buffet, not a rulebook.

You don't have to load your plate with everything just because it's popular. Pick and choose what works for you and let the rest pass like an Instagram filter fad.

3. Find your signature style.

The people we admire mostt for their looks? They have a signature aesthetic. Rihanna doesn't care if ballet flats are in-she's wearing whatever makes her look and feel Rihanna. You deserve that energy.

4. Remember: Beauty is cyclical.

If you loved something that "went out," just wait

-fashion's a boomerang, and it will come back. Don’t be shamed or let anyone shame you for liking something that is the typical standard of beauty (this week).

5. Comfort Isn't Just Physical, It’s Emotional.

Do you feel like yourself when you wear it? If a certain trend makes you feel like you're in a costume it's probably not for you. Your signature style should feel like an extension of you, not a temporary identity crisis.

6.Experiment Without Commitment.

Try trends in small doses. Love the idea of bleached brows but terrified of regret? Use a concealer trick before making it official. Thinking of embracing the "no-makeup makeup" aesthetic? Start with one or two products instead of overhauling your whole routine.

7. Give It a Week...Seriously.

This one is for my serial overspenders: Wait a week. If you’re still thinking about that viral blush shade or that “must-have” haircut after seven days, it might actually be worth trying. But if you completely forget about it by day four? Congrats, you just saved yourself money, regret, and possibly a very awkward grow-out phase. Trends are like impulse snack buys at checkout

sometimes you really wanted that chocolate bar, and sometimes you were just bored. Give yourself time to tell the difference.

Embrace the Chill Beauty Era

At the end of the day, beauty trends should be fun, not a never-ending to-do list. The goal isn't to "keep up" but to find what makes you feel like you. So next time the internet tries to convince you that your entire existence is outdated, just laugh, sip your iced coffee, and remind yourself:

You were never meant to be trendy. You were meant to be timeless.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go unbox a new lipstick that I absolutely do not need but will 100% convince myself I do. Balance, right?

Use this week to be mindful!

With Love,

-JK x
